ONERO INSTITUTE PANELS
1. OPENING SESSION & YEAR IN REVIEW
Our co-founders Elad Raymond and Andrew Ma welcome everyone to the Onero Institute's inaugural summit, share remarks about the organization and its mission to better engage youth on international issues and bridge the divide between young people and the academic/professional community, give an overview of Onero's accomplishments over the past year, and acknowledge individuals and organizations who have made the summit possible.
2. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
In this special panel, our community had the opportunity to speak with several young professionals who have recently graduated college and are now actively working in the field of international affairs and related fields. In this discussion, moderated by current GW student and Onero member Marcos Nordenstahl, we learn from Chris Kim, Cecily Fasanella, and Max Kaplan about their experiences in the workforce after graduating, their advice for younger students making their way into the field, and plans for the future.
3. LEADERS AROUND ONERO Q&A
In this panel, we hear from various leaders around the Onero Institute about their experiences working on the mission and managing the organization day to day, as well as what it is like to get involved with their specific areas of Onero. The panel included Co-founders/Executive Directors Elad Raymond and Andrew Ma, Chief Editor of the Delta Foreign Affairs Newsletter Deven Desai, Outreach Coordinator Aakash Gedela, and Director of Development Alice Li, and was moderated by Events Coordinator Lauren Tepper.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY PANELS
1. A CONTEMPORARY REVIEW OF TAIWAN'S SECURITY POSTURE (JOSH POPE)
In the first presentation of the Onero Institute Young Leaders Summit on 8/6/2021, Onero Institute Researcher and recent GW graduate ('21) Josh Pope gave a contemporary review of Taiwan's security posture. Pope's discussion included the island's defense capabilities, cross-strait relations, and the role of other important regional players. His discussant was fellow GW alumnus ('21) Max Kaplan.
2. THE FUTURE OF EUROPEAN SECURITY: STRATEGIC AUTONOMY (IVANA D'ARGENCE)
In the second presentation of the Onero Institute Young Leaders Summit on 8/6/21, rising senior at GW, Ivana D'Argence presented on European Security. As Europe looks to take more responsibility for its defense and security, talk of “strategic autonomy” has resurfaced and given rise to a great deal of controversy. How realistic is this foreign policy ambition? D'Argence's presentation addresses its surrounding misconceptions, necessity, and feasibility in light of challenges and existing capabilities. Gregory Arcuri, a recent graduate of GW ('21) and an Onero Researcher, served as discussant.
3. THE TABLED QUESTION OF CONTIGUITY: LONG-TERM CONSIDERATIONS FOR CONNECTING THE WEST BANK AND GAZA STRIP (ELAD RAYMOND)
In the third presentation of the International Security Panel of the 2021 Onero Institute Young Leaders Summit, Onero Co-founder and Executive Director, Elad Raymond, discusses his research on critical long-term considerations for linking the Palestinian territories. Joined by discussant Dr. Ned Lazarus of the Elliott School of International Affairs, Raymond presents a thorough analysis of the topic through the lens of territorial contiguity and population distribution. He highlights factors preventing negotiation on this facet of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, previous proposals and agreements, changing realities on the map and with regard to freedom of movement, as well as trends that may create obstacles to connecting the West Bank and Gaza Strip at a future point when this specific issue is negotiated on again.
GLOBAL POLITICAL MOVEMENTS PANELS
1. VACCINE NATIONALISM AND MULTILATERALISM (YASH BAJAJ)
In the first presentation in the Global Political Movements Panel of the Onero Summit, Onero Institute Researcher Yash Bajaj presented on the current state of vaccine nationalism and multilateralism in the era of COVID-19. He and discussant Jared Tucker, a GW alumnus ('21) , discussed trends in vaccine allocation and distribution, while also emphasizing the importance and benefits of vaccine multilateralism over vaccine nationalism in order to meet global vaccination needs.
