ABOUT THE EVENT
The relationship between the United States and Taiwan is among the most unique and complex in the world. Though Washington does not formally recognize the island as a sovereign state, the United States has developed significant strategic, political, and economic ties with Taiwan, which boasts one of the strongest democracies and economies in Asia. In this discussion, we will examine the many nuances of the US’ defense relationship with Taiwan. What factors allowed the status-quo of US-Taiwan relations to come to be? What circumstances could lead the US to come to the defense of Taiwan? What is the role of Taiwan in US foreign policy in Asia? What is the role of younger generations in the evolution of Taiwan’s identity and relationship with the US? And what does the future hold for the island?
Foreign Affairs with Future Leaders is a series of youth-led discussions which analyze various international issues and topics by collaboratively addressing their most critical questions. They are co-hosted by the Onero Institute and the Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Fraternity at GWU.
