ABOUT THE EVENT
As a largely unrecognized nation in the Horn of Africa, international discourse on Somaliland is primarily focused on questions of statehood. Yet, despite its lack of recognition, Somaliland is an active international player with a unique governing structure and complex civil society. In this event, we will discuss several themes relating to Somaliland’s foreign and domestic affairs in the modern day. Guided by a panel of experts, we will assess the extent to which Somaliland stands out from other states and entities in the region and where its realities place it on the path to recognition.
Foreign Affairs with Future Leaders is Onero's series of youth-led discussions which analyze various international issues and topics by collaboratively addressing their most critical questions.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Omar Mahmood joined the International Crisis Group (ICG) in January 2020 as Senior Analyst for Somalia. Previously, Omar has worked as a senior researcher focusing on the Horn of Africa for the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Addis Ababa, and as an international consultant covering Boko Haram and the Lake Chad Basin. Prior to that, he obtained his Master's degree from the Fletcher School at Tufts University and served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso.
Mohamed Farah Hersi is the director of the Academy for Peace and Development, Somaliland's oldest research think tank institution, with which he has been since 2009. He got his LL.B. from the University of Hargeisa in Somaliland, his LL.M. from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, and his Ph.D. from the University of Peace in Costa Rica. A number of articles have been published by Dr. Mohamed Farah, and he has participated in a variety of international and regional conferences in the Horn of Africa and beyond. Dr. Mohamed Farah has approximately 11 years of research, technical consulting service, policy development and analysis, and other related experience under his belt.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Originally from Dallas, Max Webb graduated from The George Washington University in May of 2021 with a BA in International Affairs with a dual concentration in Conflict Resolution and International Development as well as a regional focus on the Middle East and Horn of Africa. During his time in college, Max studied and wrote extensively on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as conflict in the greater Somali region of the Horn. He has previously served as an intern for the project on Arab-Israeli relations at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the diplomatic intern for the Kurdistan Regional Government representative office in DC, a research intern at Antioquia Presente in Medellín, Colombia, and a research aid at Reut in Tel Aviv. Currently, Max serves as the National Organizing Fellow for New York based policy group, Israel Policy Forum.
