ABOUT THE EVENT
While the modern Middle East has been fraught with intensifying rivalries and conflicts, the Sultanate of Oman has largely managed to maintain its neutrality and serve a unique diplomatic role in regional affairs. In this discussion, we will examine Oman and the particular factors that have allowed it to play such a role. How has Oman maintained its own internal stability and avoided getting drawn into regional conflicts? How does Oman balance strong relations with various opposing players in the Middle East? How much of a role can Oman play in defusing political tensions in the region? To what extent will Omani foreign policy change under its new Sultan?
Foreign Affairs with Future Leaders is a series of youth-led discussions which analyze various international issues and topics by collaboratively addressing their most critical questions. They are co-hosted by the Onero Institute and the Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Fraternity at GWU.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Laurent Kleinheinz is a third-year student at the George Washington University, studying International Affairs with a minor in Arabic. He is from San Francisco and has an interest in counter-insurgency theory and Afghan tribal politics.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Elad Raymond is Co-founder and Executive Director of the Onero Institute. He is a third-year student in the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University majoring in International Affairs with a concentration in Conflict Resolution and minoring in Geographic Information Systems. Originally from New York, his research interests include geography, peace studies, and the Middle East.
